The Facts about Fiber

Fiber is touted as being one of the most important parts of a healthy diet and aiding in weight loss. It goes hand-in-hand with a healthy diet and exercise regimen. But what is Fiber, and What is the best way to get it into your system?  This article should clear up some confusion and help you determine how much Fiber your body needs, and the best way to get it.

Fiber cannot be digested and absorbed in the intestines like other foods. Therefore, it flows through the body smoothly, cleansing the digestive tract. Fiber’s health benefits are many, including relief from constipation, lowering blood cholesterol and the risk of diabetes and heart disease. In addition, Fiber helps keep you fuller for a longer period of time, which can aid in weight loss.

[0105-healthy-eating-habits_li[1].jpg]There are two kinds of Fiber: Insoluble and Soluble. Insoluble fiber can absorb many times its weight in water, swelling inside the body. This is why taking flaxseed or psyllium husk for aiding weight loss will initially cause an increase in weight gain for up to 48 hours. Insoluble fiber is also available in  many whole grains, seeds, citrus fruits, legumes, carrots, oats, rye barley and beans. Soluble fiber works chemically with certain foods by reducing the absorption of substances into the bloodstream. Soluble fiber is in most vegetables, fruits, brown rice and oat bran.

While fiber can be cleansing and aid you in your fitness and nutrition goals, it needs to be incorporated into your diet slowly. It is advisable to consider taking an Acidophilus supplement when increasing your fiber intake. Acidophilus provides the digestive tract with healthy bacteria that can be eliminated along with the bad wastes when cleansing.
