Getting Rid of Bloat

If I had to think of one very common and under prescribed complaint among women, it would be the dreaded B word.

No, not that one. The other B word.

Bloat. Yuck.

If you're a female, you are most likely all to familiar with that feeling. The uncomfortable, large, irritating feeling. The scale creeps up, and your clothes magically stop fitting for a day or so.... It can be so bad at times that I have practically a whole seperate wardrobe during that special time of the month.

And on a more personal note, since my recent discovery of my Lactose Intolerance, let's just say everytime I even look at ice cream or cheese I better plan on wearing yoga pants the next day. Bloat has become an all too familiar part of my life lately.

If you are one of the .1% of lucky women who have no idea what I'm talking about- I don't even want to talk to you. For the rest of us, I have been searching for remedies for bloating aside from water pills and laxatives.

While I have a few temporary fixes, such as drinking LOTS of water, Psyllium Husk, and cutting out certain foods, I recently came across this little piece of information on Pinterest:

I came across it about 1 week before my period, and figured I had nothing to lose. Off to the grocery store to pick up 2 distilled gallons of water, lemon juice, and organic non-sugar cranberry juice.

All the ingredients are diuretics - that is, they help the body flush out excess water and toxins. The first ingredient - cranberry juice with no sugar- is useful in fighting against cancer and cardiovascular disease, along with cleansing the system from UTI's and Kidney Stones. It apparently helps clean away plague and bacteria from the mouth as well.

The next ingredient is Dandelion Root tea- often used as a diuretic, as well as producing bile excretion from the liver (good for "detoxing") and strengthening the immune system.

Lemon Juice - the final ingredient- is found to relieve the body of constipation and bloating, as well as producing bile from the liver just as Dandelion Root claims. It is also reported to help with skin and nail health, along with boosting the immune system due to its high content of Vitamin C.

So the idea is mix all these "super foods" together with 60 ounces - or about 8 glasses - of distilled water. I found that making 2 batches in 2 seperate, large water bottles and taking them to work with me was best.

So I drank. The mixture of tart with sweet and bitter turned out to be a lot better tasting than I had expected. After 7 days....the verdict is in.

Does this "miracle bloating drink" really work? I say yes, but with reservation. First of all- I believe that drinking 60 ounces of water a day will make you flush out toxins and waste, which will cause you to lose excess water anyways.

The question is how much of a difference did this mixture make? In my opinion, it did fairly well. I didn't lose 5 pounds....however, I didn't have any pre-period bloat, either. That in itself says a lot if you ask me. My normal bloat before that time of the month never even happened while drinking this mixture. And if this drink doesn't really work, and it's just a placebo, well - then I just wasted $17.89 at the grocery store. But hey - No harm, no foul.
